St. Stephen's School, Chandigarh, organized a Herbal Literacy Workshop on 25th October 2025 to promote awareness about the responsible and informed use of herbal plants in daily life.
The workshop commenced with an insightful address by the Principal of the school, Mr. John Xavier, who broadened the concept of literacy to include herbal literacy, emphasizing the importance of understanding, preserving, and wisely utilizing nature's herbal resources.
Mr. Omprakash introduced Dr. Rajiv Kapila, an expert in Ayurvedic traditions, who traced the roots of herbal knowledge to ancient Indian wisdom found in the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the teachings of Dhanwantri and Sushrut Rishi. He explained the three doshas - Vaat, Pitt, and Kaph - and their role in maintaining bodily balance, while also sharing simple lifestyle tips aligned with Ayurvedic principles.
Dr. Rajiv's session focused on the practical applications of Ayurveda in modern life. He emphasized dietary discipline, the use of pure spices, and the kitchen as an "Ayurvedic laboratory". He also highlighted the medicinal benefits of various herbs such as Giloy for immunity, Bhumiamla for jaundice, Karela as natural insulin, and Moringa (Sahjan) as a rich source of nutrition. He further mentioned the importance of the Ashoka tree and Shivlingi seeds as a tonic to boost fertility in women and Suanjal powder as a treatment for gout. However, it was necessary to incorporate these medicinal plants in moderation.
The workshop concluded with a message encouraging the adoption of natural, local, and seasonal living for better health and sustainability. It successfully bridged ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern wellness practices, inspiring participants to embrace a holistic lifestyle - truly reflecting the spirit of Herbal Literacy. The Chief Guests, Dr. Kapila and Mr. Omprakash were felicitated with a token of appreciation and presented with herbal plants from the school's nursery as a gesture of gratitude and to reinforce the theme of sustainable living.
