Our Beloved Founder
A vision that built a legacy
Mr. Harold Anthony Carver was a visionary educationist, institution-builder and a respected figure whose life was closely associated with the growth and development of St. Stephen’s School, Chandigarh.
With a deep commitment to education and the holistic development of young people, Carver Sir believed that a school should be much more than a place of academic learning. It should nurture character, discipline, confidence, compassion and a sense of responsibility.
His leadership was marked by dedication, determination and an enduring commitment to the values he held dear. Through his work, he helped create an educational environment in which generations of students and teachers could learn, grow and excel.
His contribution to the institution extends beyond buildings and achievements. It lives on in the values, traditions and spirit of the school.
The Carver Legacy is, above all, a legacy of education, values and service.
Carver Sir’s vision of education went beyond examination results and academic success. He believed in educating the whole person—developing the mind, strengthening character and preparing young people to become responsible members of society.
His vision was founded on several enduring principles:
Excellence in education – encouraging students to strive for their highest potential.
Character and discipline – recognising integrity, self-discipline and responsibility as essential qualities.
Holistic development – giving equal importance to academics, sports, culture, creativity and social development.
Leadership – encouraging students to develop confidence and the ability to take responsibility.
Service to others – fostering compassion, respect and concern for the wider community.
Tradition with progress – preserving the values that give an institution its identity while embracing new ideas and changing educational needs.
This vision continues to guide the institution and remains an important part of the school’s identity.
The journey of Harold Anthony Carver was one of dedication, perseverance and service to education.
Born on 8 August 1946, he grew up in Bangalore in a family of twelve siblings. Over the years, his professional journey developed into a multifaceted career in education and institution-building.
His association with St. Stephen’s became an important chapter of that journey. Through his leadership and sustained efforts, he contributed to the development of the school and its educational environment.
For decades, he remained closely connected with the institution, working with teachers, students, parents and colleagues and playing an important role in shaping the school’s growth.
His journey was also marked by recognition for his contributions and service.
The story of Carver Sir’s life is therefore not simply a chronology of positions and achievements. It is the story of a person who devoted a significant part of his life to education, institution-building and the service of young people.
His journey came to an end on 7 September 2026, but the values associated with his life’s work continue to live on in the institution he helped shape.
Carver Sir’s contribution to St. Stephen’s School can be seen in many dimensions of school life.

Dear Carver sir I will always be thankful to you for supporting me in the lowest phase of my life, when my son was hospitalized in his 8th class and exactly after two years the same boy gets a chance to meet you to thank you in the best phase of his life. I will always cherish the moment I was called to have words with you on call and your words are still in my mind. Though I didn't get the chance to work with you, but from the personality you were and the aura you carried, taught me the best lessons of my life. I am happy that whatever you wished in life, you did by God's grace, so I will always cherish your journey of life and my moments of life with you. I have the same dream as you had once in your life so wish me luck and keep sending your blessings. You will always be remembered.
A Legacy of Light and Guidance: Remembering a Mentor and Guide For thirty-six years, I had the profound privilege of walking through the corridors of St. Stephen's under the invaluable mentorship of a true visionary leader — our beloved Founder-Director, Carver Sir. To work under a person with such extraordinary depth is to witness history, grace and inspiration unfold day after day. What stays with me the most is the personal touch he gave to everybody. He made each one of us — be it a student or a senior teacher — feel seen, valued and comfortable. His warmth was evident in whatever he did. He was truly a fatherly figure: gentle in correction, firm in guidance and always ready with a solution to each and every problem. Even when we made mistakes, he showed us a different way out, with patience and understanding — that changed countless lives. His warmth and wisdom will continue to light our school's path. We will carry forward his legacy by upholding the values he lived by everyday.
It is indeed a profoundly poignant moment to remember Carver Sir for whom, I had the pleasure of composing a poetic birthday greeting, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, just a month ago. Who would have ever imagined then that he would leave everyone heartbroken and shake the very foundation of St. Stephen’s, within a span of a month? And heartbroken - because he touched lives in many an unsaid and unseen ways. With an aura that could captivate attention and hearts alike, he endeared himself to everyone who came into his sphere of contact. His quiet strength, grace, resilience and spiritual faith was beautifully rare. We feel overwhelmed at the physical loss of our Founder - Director, mentor, guide and a human being so immaculate and majestic. We reckon the tremendous force that he was and will always remain in our lives. We humbly pray that he keeps his blessings upon us and may his luminous light shine upon each one of us.
