Visit to Ladakh

Ladakh marks the boundary between the peaks of the western Himalaya and the Tibetan plateau. It has been described by many as “Little Tibet.

People here believe:"The land is so barren and the passes so high that only the best of friends or fiercest enemies would want to visit us." The travel to Leh by air gave a magnificent view of the snow-clad Himalayas and rivers, which looked like tiny streams. The view of the snow-clad majestic Himalayan ranges left us amazed at the wondrous beauty of nature untouched by humans.

We gave ourselves one day to acclimatize to the weather conditions of Leh. The next day we started with Sangam- the confluence of River Indus and Zanskar. From this point and beyond this Confluence of the two, the stream of water is regarded as the Indus River. Our next destination were the monasteries called Gompas in Leh. These Gompas are exquisite work of art and are a treat to the eyes. One common factor in all the Gompas are the prayer wheels. The monasteries which we visited were Hemis and Spituk. The most magnificent monastery was Hemis, which holds the distinction of being the oldest and wealthiest monastery of Ladakh. Spituk Monastery has a very colourful prayer room and one room is dedicated to images of Tara, called Dolma, a female Bodhisattva.

We saw another wonder The Magnetic Hill: This hill is located on the Leh-Kargil-Batalik National Highway, about 30 kms. from Leh. Imagine the movement of a vehicle up a steep mountain with its ignition off. Truly unbelievable! Opposing the Newton's Law of Gravity! But, it's not merely an optical illusion. The hill is believed to have some sort of magnetic properties because of which it attracts metallic objects, vehicles and even planes and helicopters. You just need to place your vehicle on a specific spot on the road with its engine off and the vehicle starts moving up at a speed of 20 km/hour. Even the helicopters and aircrafts feel the same magnetic impact. Pilots need to fly at a very high speed in that area to avoid the magnetic impact of the hill. Planes start to jerk if it comes within the magnetic radius of the hill.

On the way back we saw The Hall OF Fame which is a Museum having information related to Leh culture and army operations in J & K.
The Druk White Lotus School shot into limelight after it was featured as Fungsuk Wangado's school in '3 Idiots'. The school has won numerous awards for its architecture, including the best green architecture award, the most environment-friendly building and also the best architecture design award. We visited the hostel and also met the three boys who had acted in the movie 3 idiots.

Changla Pass, We could barely breathe at this altitude! In order to visit The Pangong Lake, we had to cross the second highest motorable road in the world at 17, 800 feet. The experience was amazing, most of the time we were gasping for breath. Breathtaking views all around.
On the last day we took a walk around the small town of Leh, picking up lovely souvenirs to take home and our journey was slowly drawing to a close. Six days seemed too short to take in the beauty of this place.
